Diversity and Advocacy is a prominent consideration across UKSEDS, with the goal to create more inclusive spaces both within UKSEDS and the wider space community. Through advocacy we aim to combat discrimination raising awareness on present issues through the transition from education into a workplace. We provide resources and tools to aid in processing and dealing with challenges STEM members may face.
We have created a diversity and inclusion handbook, giving guidance to UKSEDS branches in how their societies and events can be as inclusive and accessible as possible. The handbook features advice on events, communication, and best inclusive practise. It is important to review the handbook every year as best practice for being an inclusive organisation is constantly improving.
We also run Diversity in Space Careers, a one-day conference championing equality, diversity, and inclusion in the space sector. The event features a broad range of speakers from across the space sector talking about their work and their experiences overcoming personal barriers from mental health to disability and discrimination. There are also expert-led workshops teaching delegates how to support themselves and others to make the sector truly inclusive.
